I've been living in Japan for a few months and I need to return to America for a bit. I get direct-deposit into my Japanese bank account and I won't receive my money until after I leave the country, but I can't figure out how to withdraw that money while in America. My bank doesn't issue checks, traveler's checks have to be prepaid, and my ATM card doesn't have a magnetic strip or a credit card logo (it just has a microchip). What can I do?
Do you have an American bank account? Can your bank set up a wire transfer in advance? See if they can do this.
In the US, some banks offer prepaid Visa cards for travelers that may be used anywhere in the world to make purchases or withdraw cash. It's called Visa TravelMoney, and it's funded from your bank account. I don't speak Japanese, but check Visa's Tokyo webpage to see if they offer something similar. If so, can they be ordered online and pay using your bank information?
