Paper 101 Rolls Receipts and other Specialty Papers

In schools, in our offices and even at home, we almost always have the need to use papers. There are so many kinds of paper – they come in various colors, thickness, styles, shapes and designs. With the many papers available for us to choose from, are we really familiar which type of paper is best to select to meet our needs at a given time?

Let us take a look into some types of , specialty paper rolls and receipts and hopefully we may be able to identify them once we get to encounter them while at home, while working, while studying or even outside of these three venues.

Specialty paper types:

• Inkjet Paper:

Specifically for full color inkjet applications on your printers, inkjet papers should be used. They are particularly good to use to ensure full colors, good text definition and maximum color brightness. They also boost the smoothness of the sheet, affecting image quality.

Thermal Paper:

When exposed to heat, a thermal paper changes color due to chemicals (mixture of dye and acids) which are permeated on the surface of the paper. Thermal papers are used in cash registers, thermal printers, POS or point-of-sale printers, adding machines, credit card terminals, and automated teller machines or ATMs.

*Some Examples of Thermal Paper are:
- ATM Receipt Paper Rolls
– Kiosk Receipts

In addition, aside from paper, these credit card terminals, ATMs and other machines make use of supplies such as printer ribbons, imprinters, technical cleaning supplies, counterfeit bill detectors, among others.

• Business Card Paper:

This is a slightly thicker specialty paper/card which shows the business details about an individual or a company. I'm sure you've been given one at least once by a client or a new business fellow. Nowadays, aside from the usual papers or cards, special materials such as plastics, metals and even rubbers are being used to produce special business cards.

• Perforated Paper:

This specialty paper somehow imitates an embroidery canvass – that which is used in cross-stitching. It is a lightweight card with evenly spaced holes. Different shades of perforated paper are available in the market today.

• Hole-Punched Paper:

Think of a simple white copy paper with holes punched on the sides, on top or at the bottom of the paper. It can be used for sketching or as leaves of a notebook.

• Carbonless Paper:

It is also called Non-Carbon Copy Paper or NCR (No Carbon Required) Paper. This is a substitute to the carbon paper, which is used to produce a copy of the original, handwritten record without having to use any electronics.

• Synthetic Paper:

For technicality, synthetic papers is described as "a product manufactured using synthetic resin derived from petroleum as its primary material, which while maintaining the characteristics of the material, offers several qualities similar to that of paper made primarily from wood pulp, most typically its white and opaque appearance as well as its printing and processing capabilities." It is said that recently the demand for this kind of specialty paper has been increasing due to its tear resistance feature and recyclability, compared to the traditional papers available.

Degrading Old Floor Registers

Replacing a flooring system and not installing new floor registers that match the new floor is an unsightly mistake, yet easy to overlook.

If you are a homeowner, then you will have to hire a flooring contractor at some point, to replace or cover up the carpet, vinyl, hardwood or some type of flooring in your home.

And when you do, make sure you get all of the accessories that go along with the new floor, as well as match the scheme of the house and/or room where it is being installed.

One of the most common mistakes that degrade the intended look of a room is replacing the flooring and reinstalling the old floor registers.

You may be surprised to know that 75 percent of the floors that are replaced each year get accessorized with degrading old floor registers, instead of new decorative floor registers to match the scheme of the rooms.

Before I get into the selection process, I want to point out how and why this happens.

When most of us need work done to our homes, the first thing we do is pickup the yellow pages or go to some sort of online phone book and look for someone we think can do what we need, schedule an appointment and wait for them to show up.

Even though this works for some people, this is not the best way to get a professional job done and done with all the right products. Simply because most of the businesses listed in the phone books are contractors, not decorators or designers and only care about giving you what you want not what you need.

The best choice is to visit a local flooring center so you can view a larger selection of products and get ideas from their decorators on how to match accessories, like floor registers, to the actual flooring you are going to have installed.

Even if you decide not to purchase from that store, at least you will have a better understanding of what you need so you can make sure to mention to the contractor that you want to have decorative floor registers installed to match your flooring.

Thankfully, this most commonly overlooked issue of installing new floor registers to complement your new flooring, is something anyone can do themselves. So if hindsight is 20/20, do not worry, you are not stuck with what you got.

This brings us to the issues of how to choose and install floor registers, heating registers, grates, grilles or what ever term you like to use.

Let us begin with the installation so you know how to choose the right sizes. All you have to do is remove the existing registers, usually done with a screwdriver, measure the length and width of the opening in the floor, and reinstall until you get the new ones.

Subtract 1/8" to 1/4"(depending on how square the opening is) and this is the inside dimensions for the new floor registers.

You can now use these dimensions to choose and order your new floor grates.

As far as choices, there are literally hundreds of different styles and finishes to choose from. Pick colors or finishes matching each room, but try to stay with the same style throughout the house. This will keep each room coordinated together.

If you have some rooms of your home that you change the colors or decorations in often, it is best to select neutral colors to these room. Also make sure to take cabinets wallpaper and other decor in the rooms into consideration.

You may also want to look at replacing the air return grilles to match the look of your new floor registers.

By following these guidelines, you can have a wonderful looking home interior that stands out in the crowd, and usually for less than $250 bucks.

I need a search bar!?

I am looking to start up a new website which searches for restaurants nearby.

I want the user to have to enter their postcode and it will search the restaurants near them from a database I have set up or a single file with URL's.

I also want the search results to have a thumbnail (a picture of the restaurant).

Could anybody please tell me about how I could make this work? Or suggest looking or post a website with a tutorial, or suggest a piece of software??

Thanks in advance!!

Web based POS Software for Restaurant Chain with TOUCH SCREEN functionality

Restaurant POS Management: Taking care of your inventory

A major key to running a profitable restaurant is managing the controllable costs, such as food, labor and supplies. Of those, probably the most challenging cost to control is food.

To manage food costs effectively, an operator will need to monitor portion sizes, prevent theft, watch waste and order simultaneously.

Inventory software can help you identify precisely where your food costs are out of line. Using inventory control software will typically save you 1 to 2 percent of sales, and may perhaps save you much more. And it’s savings that drops straight to your bottom line as profit.

With a POS-based inventory control system operators can spot and solve food cost problems that might not become clear by simply focusing on portion control. And when your employees know that the system is carefully keeping track, it eliminate waste as well as theft.

A single restaurateur will be able to realize this lesson, when it comes to food cost problems, after a week of using an inventory control software.

Inside his restaurant, he would be portion controlling, yield testing and doing a physical inventory, but it wasn’t until he began using inventory software that he began to realize his inventory was out by exactly 2 pounds of fish each week; coincidentally, single box weights exactly the same! Upon knowing, it was relatively that easy to specify where the problem originated: a prep cook who was helping himself to a box of shrimp every Saturday evening.

Boosting your bottom line

In a typical restaurant point of sale inventory control program, an operator sets up the software by first entering their recipes and product costs. The system then can track ideal usage based on those recipes and the restaurant’s actual sales.

The software also can track product usage in situations where some orders don’t conform to a standard recipe. The operator then can do a physical inventory and generate reports comparing that inventory with the calculated ideal usage in order to identify variances. The software can be set up to track as many items as the operator chooses.

Generally in restaurants, their top 10 items 80% of their food cost problem. And you can schedule nightly counts of key items and weekly or even monthly counts of some other items.

Even an ounce of over-portioning 1 item per order can cause a restaurant hundreds of dollars. By eliminating over-portioning on 100 orders per day for 30 days on a $1.67 per pound of an item, can add up to more than $300.00 in savings or $3600.00 per year!

Keeping a better track and control also can help an operator reduce the amount of stock they keep on hand, reducing waste and freeing up cash for other things. Losses due to carrying too much extra inventory can add up to a loss of between 2% and 5 % on an average operator’s profit-and-loss statement.

According to one of our clients it was a lot of work to set up because they have a fairly extensive menu, and by helping them program it properly, we were able to drop their food cost by 2 to 4 percent – a reasonable addition to their bottom line profits.

So if you're using a restaurant POS system or are planning a purchase make sure you understand the additional profits that you can gain and the "how to's" by learning and using the inventory module of the system as you should be.

Travel Guide To Paris

Every Paris travel guide seems to have something to add to the already voluminous information available on such well-known spots as the Louvre and Orsay museums, Notre Dame Cathedral, and the Eiffel Tower.

Yet what about discovering the quaint neighborhoods of the 19th century Paris? Or taking pictures of the inn built for the paupers by Nicholas Flamel in the 15th century (yes, that's the same Nicholas Flamel written about in Harry Potter)?

In my reckoning, there's a truly interesting way of discovering Paris, and that's to take the less traveled path. The one I take with my friends when we visit the French capital.

So, let's assume you are as eager as we are to learn something new about Paris, and let's take a peek at just two of its less-well-known jewels. The next time you take the trip to Paris, you'll be the one leading the way!

The Lutece Arena, a return into time

Before Paris became Paris, the city was the capital of the territory occupied by the Parisii, the Gallic tribe after which Paris will take its name in the 4th century A.D. There is some controversy about the original Celtic name of the city, but when the Romans invaded it in 52 B.C. under Emperor Julius Caesar, they called it Lutecia (or Lutetia).

In the 2nd century A.D., the Romans built in its middle an amphitheater of about 25,000 square feet, which could hold about 16,000 spectators. During the next century, gladiator fights and other less palatable games (e.g. offering early Christians for lunch to beasts of prey) were held for the benefit of the local Roman population.

With the fall of the Roman Empire, such games became much less popular, and as Christianity became the State religion, man-eating events ceased to be held altogether.

The arena was demolished during the barbarian invasions of 280 A.D., and the site later became a cemetery. In the late 12th century, the ruins were buried under a large rampart built to defend Paris. They remained forgotten until 1869 when they were unearthed to the greatest surprise of all historians.

At the time, the City Council decided Paris did not have the funds necessary to excavate and preserve the antique discovery, and the development project which had dug out the ruins was green-lighted.

Later on, in 1883, the site was repurchased and rehabilitated under the guidance of French novelist Victor Hugo (author of 'Les Miserables'). A further rehabilitation project began in 1916 which unearthed the site completely. Vicious attempts at taking over the site and destroying it by unashamed, greedy, low-life real-estate developers were thwarted by the local dwellers in 1980.

How do you get to see this beautiful place which, to this day, still remains 'stealthy'?

Orient yourself on a map, take the subway to the 'Monge' station, and walk to No. 47 Rue Monge. Enter the hallway, walk along the corridor and there you are! Right on the sandy ground of the arena where ghosts of ferocious lions still roam in search for a human prey!

A guaranteed, amazing leap in the past, just short of 2,000 years ago!

The Botanical Gardens and their Alpine Garden

Now on to another amazing curiosity which is sure to tickle the interest of our plant-loving friends.

In 1640 A.D., under the reign of King Louis the 14th (the same king who presided over the development of the Versailles Palace), the Royal Garden of Medicinal Herbs opened its doors 'to the general public and students'. The project had been green-lighted in 1626 by King Louis the 13th.

The Jardin des Plantes (Botanical Gardens), as it has been called since the French revolution, is actually a collection of individual gardens -- each with a peculiar charm and specific plants. It houses several old structures, including the Botanical School and the Magny Mansion (built in 1650). The Botanical Gardens are a huge site with a total surface area of about 2,600,000 square feet.

Each of the individual gardens is unique and deserves your attention for each one is home to specific species of flowers, vegetables, trees, and medicinal plants. On the Botanical School's plot alone some 4,500 plants are grown. The Rose Garden (La Roseraie) counts some 170 species of roses!

Amongst these beauties, the Alpine Garden stands out. Between the Otter Basin and the Cuvier alley (Cuvier was a famous French botanist), a 40,000 square foot parcel was delineated in 1931 for the growing of a diversity of mountain plant species.

Today, the gardeners of the Alpine Garden tend to the health of plants coming from places as diverse as the United States, China, Japan, the Balkans, Morocco, the Caucasian mountains, Spain, and the Himalaya Mountains! A total of some 2,000 species to look after.

Among the hallmarks of the Alpine Garden is its 18th century Pistachio tree. The Botanical Gardens house several historical trees: the oldest one was directly imported from the Eastern United States and planted here in 1636 (an acacia). Among other ancient trees, you can also admire a Lebanese cedar, which was brought back to France in 1734.

A visit to the Botanical Gardens and its Alpine Gardens is a whole afternoon affair. Ten minutes into the place and its quietness will make you oblivious of the hustle-bustle of the city. You will come out of your stroll absolutely ravished, marveling at the job the gardeners do to maintain this privileged environment in full bloom.

How do you access this temple of Mother Nature? Take the subway to the 'Gare d'Austerlitz' station. Walk to the Austerlitz Bridge (Pont d'Austerlitz) and you will find yourself on a semi-circular plaza (Place Valhubert). The entrance to the Botanical Gardens is here. It is open every day from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

And on Hemingway's words, I leave you until Part II of this series of "Paris: New Itineraries for a Fresh View".

" If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast." -- Ernest Hemingway

Dynamics GP and Barcode Scanning: How to Enable Cooperation

There are various potential scenarios, where you may need barcode scanner working with Great Plains forms, fields and tables.  The most popular requests are turning Sales Order Processing form into Cash Register POS transaction with barcode scanner attached directly via USB port; and the second is more advanced – implement something, that could be categorized by Warehouse Management System, where Barcode scanners are deployed in the warehouses and scanned documents (usually Inventory site-to-site transfers and adjustments, Sales Order Allocations, Purchase Receipts) need to be uploaded to GP.  We also saw numerous pretty unique requests, such as opening Bill of Material module forms for partial barcode scanning to facilitate assemblies.  Barcode scanner is by its nature similar to computer keyboard, initial idea was probably to break through human brain and hand limitations in typing in characters and digits, as definitely scanner works numerous times faster.  Cheap USB connected barcode scanner could still be considered as keyboard typing accelerator.  But, modern advanced laser scanners have such features as operating system, screen/user interface, memory (where you can scan the whole document or even the whole batch of documents and upload them later on in so-called batch mode).  These improvements open multiple opportunities, but at the same time, they probably make the interaction between classic Corporate ERP application not such straight forward, as it used to be with USB scanner.  Let's take a look at the details and options:

1. How to upload scanned documents in so-called batch mode?  This is something that is not present in original Great Plains business logic.  You can try Integration Manager, but this solution would be too complex (too many steps, and you do not expect that type of skills from your warehouse worker and even shift manager).  Yes, the natural approach is to program small application, driver, in the case of Great Plains it is typically Dexterity custom programing.  What you need to program here is the following: pull scanned records from the scanner memory and translate them into GP documents.  Dexterity is not the only tool to consider, but it is very powerful and traditionally customizations were done in Dex.  You can also review such integration tool as eConnect.  In the case of eConnect, consider creating special application in C# or VB.Net (other languages probably have less code samples available, but you can try whatever is your language in .Net).  There is another option – Modifier with VBA, where you have to be familiar with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) – you do connection to the database via pre .Net ADO mechanism.  Next tool to take a look at is SDK for Microsoft Visual Studio

2. Doesn't it look as very complex, whatever was mentioned in the previous paragraph?  It probably does.  And if it does for you, consider picking the product, or often called Add-on to Great Plains.  These add-ons are available through Dynamics GP ISV channel, where you can see the demo for various POS, Warehouse Management, Supply Chain Management, Fixed Asset extensions, supporting Barcoding and even RFID.  Here at Alba Spectrum we are offering the complete solution for WMS, integrated with Great Plains SOP, POP, and Inventory Control modules with options to alter the code to make it fit to your custom unique business requirements

3. USB Scanners and GP.  If you think that all your Great Plains users are at the same time warehouse workers, or maybe POS cashiers, you may consider to connect USB barcode scanner to your Cash Register with GP user interface installed and train your sales force to work in SOP Transaction entry screen and how and when to scan the barcode labels of the checked out merchandise.  For the scanning on the warehouse floor you may consider tiny computers (maybe netbooks, or similar), assuming that you provide reliable wireless network down in the warehouse, as Dynamics GP workstation should have permanent connection to the SQL Server via ODBC by the nature of Great Plains technology

4. Barcode Label printing options.  First of all – Report Writer (directly available in user interface) supports barcode fonts.  You may modify inventory items report (by taking all the fields, out of the scope of the printable area on only print item ID in barcode font).  RW is definitely possible, however you may find some annoying problems, especially with page format, positioning (as you have to spend pretty expensive barcode labels to continue RW printing testing).  For more advanced approach we recommend you to consider such tools as Crystal Reports, Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), or even MS Excel or Microsoft Access (pulling data via ODBC directly from GP company database)

5. Couple of words to international customers.  If you are part of the multinational corporation with Dynamics GP implemented in the Headquarters in USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK, English speaking South East Asia or Spanish speaking Latin America – Great Plains might do wonderful job on the corporate level, but you have to research Corporate ERP localization potential issues: compliance to local taxes, business related legislation and local language support.  Traditionally Great Plains Dexterity doesn't support hieroglyphs (Chinese, Japanese, Korean), there are some tools (NJ Star for example), enabling Chinese, but the issue remains.  We do not really recommend Great Plains as ERP in such countries, as Russia, Brazil, China, where business legislation is too unique and very strong and where GP is not localized.  Please consider instead either Microsoft Dynamics AX Axapta or if you have small subsidiary – SAP Business One

6. Local and Nationwide Support in USA and Canada.  Service is available nationwide via web sessions and phone (VOIP, Skype) conferences.  We come onsite for the implementation, when required.  So far we were able to implement barcoding related solutions internationally: Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Ecuador, Canada, Russia, Cayman Islands, Bermuda, so feel free to share your project with us

7. Second Opinion.  We are mostly involved in second hand Corporate ERP customer support and integration projects market.  If you feel that your WMS, SCM, Barcoding, or any generic integration, customization, reporting project for Dynamics GP, SAP Business One was screwed up by original consulting company, feel free to share your story with us – we have numerous successful ERP, MRP and Accounting application recovery case studies
