Why is Photoshop so expensive and is there a big difference between the various ones on the market?
I know that when I was in Staples at one point they had a version of Photoshop for over $400, and today I got an email from Costco for Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 and Adobe Premiere Elements 8 for Windows for $139.99 for both including shipping then it comes with a $20 instant rebate when you check out plus an additional $30 mail-in rebate for a grand total of $89.99 after all the rebates. I am just wondering if Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 is the Photoshop that I always hear everyone talk about using for cropping pictures, doing different things with pictures, etc. And what is Premiere 8? Do you use both together? I know absolutely nothing about this software but I know my daughter has been asking for Photoshop to do different things with her photos.

No, Elements is a stripped down version of the full version which is called Photoshop CS4. This program usually sells for around $600. But when you compare it to the full versions of other professional software, it really isn't all that expensive. ARC GIS (a graphical mapping program) costs about $1500 for the base program. After you purchase all of the plug ins it can cost upwards of $4000. Auto CAD costs about the same or more.
These are professional, high end programs. They are expensive. But there are a couple of open source graphics editors that are free. GIMP is one of them. It is very close to Photoshop in functionality. It can be downloaded from: http://www.gimp.org Give it a try, I think you'll like it. But do be advised, all of these programs have a pretty steep learning curve.

Circuit City and Direct TV are sending me in CIRCLES?
HELP ME IF YOU CAN! In July 06 we went to Circuit City and puchased a plasma tv, along with a mount, installation, and a Direct TV HD DVR. We purchased all of these items together in order to receive an instant rebate. The sales rep at Circuit City informed us that the Direct TV HD DVR would not allow us to view our local channels in HD because of a software conflict with TIVO, but Direct TV was working on a new HD DVR without TIVO that would be available in a few months, and that since we were purchasing this one, we would automatically recieve the new HD DVR that does show our local channels, and that we would not have to pay for it since we were outright buying this DVR. December came along and we received no new DVR. We called Direct TV, who offerred to sell us the new DVR for $299, but said they do not do free upgrades. I contacted Circuit City and asked them to honor what the sales person told us, and they told us to contact Direct TV. What should we DO????
Unfortunately, the sales rep at Circuit City didn't know what the hell he was talking about (what a surprise) and lied to you. All of us with HD Tivos (I still have mine) will have to pay for the new DVRs. But, I've heard of people getting pretty good discounts if you complain and barter with the DirecTV people - they rather take some money off than lose you as a customer. Just make sure you explain your situation and keep talking to people until someone agrees to make a deal with you.
Especially when the new HD channels roll out later this year (there are supposed to be around 100), everyone will need the new DVR, so I'm thinking that DirecTV will have some kind of offer for those of us with Tivos.

You need to be within 50 miles of the broadcast stations to view your local HD channels, and unfortunately, many people are not. You can check on this site:

And yes, the Tivo is functionally better than DirecTV's new DVRs, but it will never be able to view the MPEG-4 broadcasts, so we all will have to change eventually. I really wish DirecTV and TIVO could have worked out a deal....
